Smoking Withdrawal – Breaking the Addictive Cycle

June is the month of National Drug Awareness, and in keeping with this, an article on Smoking Withdrawal is particularly appropriate, given that Nicotine Addiction is the most prominent addiction in our society.

There is general agreement that the prime factor underlying various forms of habitual tobacco use is addiction to nicotine. Approximately 30% of young individuals who start smoking become addicted. Once addicted, smokers report pleasure, relaxation, improved attention, reduced anxiety, relief from hunger and stress.

Nicotine is a mood leveler, causing arousal during fatigue and relaxation during anxiety. Cigarettes contain 0.13 to 2 mg of nicotine per cigarette. % mg of nicotine per day is enough to cause addiction.
SMOKING WITHDRAWAL - BREAKING THE ADDICTIVE CYCLE

From the above, it would appear that nicotine is acting as a therapeutic drug in relieving symptoms of a number of mental conditions. Unfortunately, it has many adverse health outcomes due to the manner in which it is inhaled.

Side effects of Tobacco

Short term problems:

  • Diminished or extinguished sense of smell and taste

  • Frequent colds

  • Smoker’s cough

  • Increase in heart rate and blood pressure

  • Physiological stress and anxiety

Potential Problems associated with regular use:

  • Emphysema

  • Heart Disease

  • Gastric Ulcers

  • Bronchitis

  • Heart Disease

  • Stroke

  • Cancer of the mouth, larynx, pharynx, oesophegus, lungs, pancreas, cervix, uterus and bladder

  • Premature and more abundant face wrinkles

Biochemically, the misery of tobacco withdrawal can be mitigated through appropriate nutritional therapy. This does not, however, lessen the importance of psychological counseling and health education in smoking cessation programs. Smoking is a learned behaviour that must be unlearned. The nutritional approach can go a long way though, in lessening the biochemical aspects that may cause a smoker to give up a ‘stop smoking program’.

Nicotine Withdrawal

The main focus of nutritional support in any ‘stop smoking endeavour or program’ is to assist with these withdrawal symptoms and thereby discourage relapse.

In females, smoking urges increase in the luteal phase of their cycles (post ovulation) and can result in greater difficulty quitting smoking, therefore women are encouraged to quit in the follicular phase of their cycle (menstruation to ovulation).

Nutritional Support for Quitting Smoking

Tyrosine
The amino acid tyrosine is one of the most important nutrients in mitigating the biochemical effect of smoking withdrawal via its ability to support the neurotransmitter dopamine, especially when combined with Vitamin B6, B3, C, magnesium, zinc and iron.

Please be advised however that anyone taking MAO Antidepressants or with a current or past history of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland), gliobastoma multiforme tumours, melanoma or schizophrenia cannot use tyrosine or supplements containing tyrosine due to their clinical contraindications.

Choline
Choline plus cofactors Acteyl -L- Carnitine, Vitamin B5 and B1 help in reducing anxiety and panic attacks in smokers by promoting a calming effect on the autonomic nervous system.

Glutamine
The amino acid glutamine along with Vitamin B6 helps to induce GABA production. GABA is the neurotransmitter responsible for reducing anxiety and agitation.

Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and its levels are severely depleted in smokers. Replenishing Vitamin C status in the body may assist with post smoking recovery and reduces cravings. Vitamin C combined with R Lipoic acid increases glutathione levels which binds to cigarette smoke toxins and facilitates their removal from the body.

Additional Guidelines

  1. Take bicarbonate of soda, ¼ to 1 teaspoon one hour BEFORE meals during the initial phase of withdrawal. This will reduce the rate of nicotine excretion from the body, and hence withdrawal symptoms.

  2. Eat 5 – 6 small meals daily.1

  3. Choosing the appropriate time to actively be committed to quitting smoking is of paramount importance. If you are female, always seek to quit smoking in the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle, not the luteal phase. In general, if there is much stress and pressure in your life, then this is also not the ideal time to attempt to quit. Find a time when your life is relatively balanced and you have the will and space to commit to a quit smoking program.

  4. There are also many different vibrational remedies available that can support the emotional, mental and physical processes of quitting smoking. These can be made up individually according to your needs.

  5. Ensure you have adequate support to help you succeed in breaking this addiction. This support includes family, health professional, medical (if needed) and psychological. The more support and assistance you have, the better your chances of truly succeeding.
