Whey
Protein
Whey
protein,
once the
exclusive
domain of
body
builders, is
now more
popular than
ever for
nutrition
conscious
people of
all ages.
Protein is
the most
abundant
constituent
in the human
body besides
water.
Amongst
other
functions,
it makes up
the
structure of
your skin,
hair, nails,
bones,
muscles,
tendons and
ligaments,
and is
required for
hormonal and
enzymatic
function.
Your body
continuously
breaks
protein down
into its
individual
building
blocks the
amino acids,
and then
re-assembles
the amino
acids into
the bodily
structures
it requires.
It’s vital
that you eat
some protein
every day,
because
although the
body can
create some
of the amino
acids it
needs,
others
(termed
essential
amino acids)
are only
available
from your
diet.
The

-
Feel

after
eating,
and stay
fuller
for
longer
-
Improve
digestion
by
increasing
nutrient
absorption
-
Maintain
steady
energy
levels
(reduce
fatigue)
and
metabolism
-
Support
healthy
memory
and
sleep
patterns
-
Rebuild
and
repair
all
kinds of
tissue
from
bones to
joints
and skin
This
impressive
list of
functions
means that
protein can
be an
important
nutrient for
students
studying for
exams,
pregnant and
breast
feeding
women,
weekend
warriors and
serious
athletes,
vegans and
vegetarians,
the elderly
or those on
weight
management
programs,
convalescing
or consuming
a poor diet.
So just to
dispel any
myths, what
protein
won’t do –
at least,
not by
itself – is
bulk you up!
Whey protein
isolate
versus
concentrate
Whey is a
by-product
of cheese
manufacture,
it contains
little fat
or lactose
due to
processing,
hence is
easily
digested.
NutriVital
Good For You
Foods has
recently
added two
high quality
protein
powders to
their range.
Shakes and
smoothies
are an ideal
way to add
protein to
your day.

Whey protein isolate (WPI) is a high protein (usually around 90 per cent) low fat, low carbohydrate and low sugar supplement. WPI is the result of a longer and more complicated filtering process than WPC, and as such has a lower level of lactose (it contains around 1-2 per cent) and fat than WPC. This is the premium protein, ideal for use in the first thirty minutes after training to assist with muscle recovery and muscle building. Also for those on calorie restricted diets WPI is an ideal choice.
Whey protein concentrate (WPC) provides the body with a steady supply of protein throughout the day and night (WPC has a typical protein content of around 80 per cent), ideal to sustain hunger pangs in between meals, and for muscle recovery and development. With a higher amount of lactoferrin than WPI this is ideal as an everyday protein supplement for everyday health, energy. |
